Orthodontics for Kids
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends little ones visit an orthodontist for an evaluation by the age of seven. Don’t worry, that doesn’t automatically mean appliances or braces for kids. This first visit is just an opportunity for Dr. VanderWall to examine your child’s teeth and jaws to make sure their development is on track and to predict the optimal time to start treatment.
By the age of seven, the first adult molars are usually in, which establishes the back bite. At this time, Dr. VanderWall can assess the front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships to get a clear picture of how your child’s bite is shaping up. In many cases, intervention won’t be needed. Your child will simply begin an observational period where they’ll come in for occasional visits over the years. This will allow Dr. VanderWall to keep an eye on their smile and pinpoint the ideal time to begin treatment to achieve the best results.
If Dr. VanderWall does detect certain emerging issues, however, there are huge benefits to catching them while a child is still growing. With careful intervention, we can guide the growth and development of the teeth and jaws to prevent concerns from becoming larger problems that could require surgery, extractions or complicated, lengthy treatment down the road.
