Few patients ask about aligners without asking about time. Weddings, graduations and job interviews all have dates, so knowing how long does Invisalign take helps people decide when to begin. The honest answer is a range rather than a number. Plenty of cases wrap up within a year. Others run about as long as braces would.

Mild spacing or a slightly rotated front tooth needs only a short series of trays. The Cleveland Clinic suggests up to nine months for a few slightly crooked teeth. More serious issues take several months beyond that. Bite corrections, crowding that requires space and rotated back teeth all add trays.
Dr. VanderWall gives a time estimate only after the exam and diagnosis. Our clear aligner FAQ puts it plainly: treatment length depends on how complex the case is and how well the aligners are worn. Until the bite has been examined, any number is a guess.
Aligners only move teeth while they are in. Our office asks patients to keep them in about 20 to 22 hours a day. They come out for meals, for any drink other than water, and for cleaning. A tray left in its case through a long lunch is a tray doing nothing.
Short lapses add up quietly. An hour here and there becomes a day of lost movement by the end of the week. When teeth fall behind the plan, the next tray may not seat well, and the orthodontist may need to slow down or order refinement trays. That is the most common way a timeline stretches.
Speech can sound a little different in the first few days, which tempts some people to leave trays out during calls or meetings. Most voices adjust quickly. Pushing through that first week pays off in a steadier schedule afterward.

Each set is worn for a fixed stretch before switching to the next, often one to two weeks depending on the plan. Our clear aligner procedure page explains the sequence, from the first scan to the final tray. Office visits come around every six to eight weeks so the team can confirm the teeth are tracking.
A randomized trial of Invisalign wear protocols in adolescents found that seven day and fourteen day changes gave comparable accuracy over a short treatment window. That study was small and focused on a narrow phase of treatment. Your own change schedule is set by the orthodontist and should not be shortened at home.
Treatment begins with a digital scan on our iTero scanner, used in place of putty impressions. The scan is used to plan each tooth movement and produce the trays. Small tooth colored bumps called attachments are often bonded to some teeth so the aligners can grip and steer them.
There is a gap between the scan and the first tray while the aligners are made. Planning around that lead time matters if you have a deadline. Attachments are usually placed when the first trays are fitted. They come off at the end, and the teeth are polished.
Adults sometimes worry that their teeth will move more slowly than a teenager’s. Teeth move at any age, and adults who wear their trays consistently can do well with aligners. Gum health and any past dental work do matter, which is one reason the exam looks beyond the teeth themselves.
Growing teens bring a different variable. New molars may still be coming in, and the plan has to allow for them. Invisalign Teen trays include eruption tabs that leave room for teeth still coming in. Our Invisalign Teen page explains how they work for younger patients.
Patients sometimes ask whether a particular brand works more quickly. The practice offers Invisalign and 3M Clarity aligners, among other systems, and the choice depends on the case. Timing is driven by the bite and by wear time far more than by the label on the box.
Toward the end, a new scan may show teeth that are close but not quite there. Some plans then add refinement trays to address those details. They add some weeks, and they are a normal part of aligner treatment rather than a sign that something went wrong. Asking about refinements at the start keeps expectations realistic.
The last tray is not the finish line. Once the teeth are in place, a retainer scan is taken and clear retainers are made. They are worn often at first and, eventually, mostly at night. Our retainer care page covers how to keep them clean.
The most reliable way is consistent wear. Changing trays early or skipping checkups tends to backfire, because teeth that are not ready will not follow the next set.
It depends on the case. Some bites finish in a similar time with either approach, while others suit one more than the other. Dr. VanderWall explains this at the consultation.
Not much, if you call promptly. The team will tell you whether to move ahead or go back a tray while a replacement is arranged.
Age is not the issue. Teens can do very well with aligners when they keep them in. Missed wear is the main thing that stretches a plan, at any age.
Only with a retainer. Teeth tend to drift back without one, and that drift can undo months of work. Wearing retainers as directed protects the time you invested.
Your plan length decides it. Most patients come in about every six to eight weeks until the final tray.
